The Issue

For the past few years, I've found myself unable to purchase essential agricultural machinery due to prohibitive VAT costs. Each time I come across a Ford 8340 at a reasonable price, I feel a flicker of excitement and hope. However, upon clicking on the ad, I see the price inflated by VAT, pushing it beyond my budget. And recently, what truly infuriated me was finding a Massey Ferguson 35 with only one rim, no rear wings, and no seat priced at £1450 plus VAT.

The added cost of VAT on agricultural vehicles, equipment, and machinery represents a significant financial burden on farmers across the UK. Agricultural machinery is not a luxury; it is a necessity to maintain efficient farming operations, ensuring that food reaches our tables. In these challenging economic times, every penny counts, and the additional VAT cost can make or break a purchase decision.

According to the UK government's own statistics, the agricultural sector contributes substantially to the national economy, employing scores of people and forming the backbone of our rural communities. We must support our farmers by alleviating these financial burdens, allowing them to invest in better equipment, which in turn will enhance productivity and sustainability.

By removing VAT from agricultural vehicles and machinery, we will not only support individual farmers but also bolster the agricultural sector as a whole, ensuring it remains competitive and resilient against the challenges it faces.

I urge relevant authorities to reconsider the tax policies affecting agricultural machinery. By eliminating VAT from these essential purchases, we can help farmers across the UK invest in their futures, sustain their businesses, and continue providing for our communities.
