Remove Tom Zirpoli from the Carroll County Times for Antisemitic & Inflammatory Commentary

The Issue

Dear Mr. David Smith,

We, the undersigned, request that you remove Mr. Tom Zirpoli from the staff of the Carroll County Times. Some of us had the honor and pleasure of hearing you speak with business acumen, practical wisdom, and humor at the Republican Club of Carroll County on Tuesday, 7 April 2024, and appreciated your mission and vision of what will drive the future of the Baltimore Sun and its subsidiary publications, including the Carroll County Times. You spoke of the critical importance of fact-based reporting, regardless of the manner or type of submission. Mr. Zirpoli asserts much as fact, replete with red herrings and strawmen, without any substantiation or authentication per primary, peer-reviewed sources.

Where this has become dangerous and offensive is his confirmation-biased commentary concerning Israel and the metastasis of antisemitism on our own soil, particularly college campuses. His numerous antisemitic and antizionist columns are inflammatory, not just to Jews and those who stand beside them and Israel, not just to the conservatives and Republicans he blanketly gaslights as antisemitic, but inflammatory to pro-Hamas sympathizers who feel that they are validated and vindicated by Mr. Zirpoli. Social media commentary on Mr. Zirpoli's columns are fraught with incessant harassment of conservatives by leftists employing a disproportionate armada of anonymous accounts.

As you mentioned, it is clearly up to us, as citizens, to provide the alternate view for your publications, to dismantle the history and current events revisionism of Mr. Zirpoli and his minimal and waning following. We understand that what sells gets published. That said, we can categorically state that it is precisely this type of content that has kept readers from maintaining their subscriptions and new subscribers from coming on board. To us, the undersigned, Mr. Zirpoli himself is the embodiment of what has turned people off to the Carroll County Times, what we see as the face of anti-intellectualism, essentially short-attention-span-theater in print. The following baseless articles since the savage Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, monthly as of late, include the following:

8 March 2024: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatens Israeli democracy

10 April 2024: Benjamin Netanyahu is a threat to Israel's future

15 May 2024: GOP hypocrisy regarding college protesters runs deep

There are numerous antizionist articles that predate 7 October 2023, as well, and no content by Mr. Zirpoli or others illustrating the counterargument grounded in truth. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
