Upon my visit to the Denver Aquarium, I was astonished to find that tigers were housed there. This surprise soon turned into concern as I noticed signs of distress and a lack of adequate enrichment for these majestic creatures. The enclosure was small for two tigers, and they appeared underweight compared to others I've seen in reputable zoos. This is not the life such powerful animals deserve.

Tigers require vast, stimulating environments to thrive both physically and mentally. The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) and established sanctuaries provide these necessities through spacious habitats, a diverse range of enrichment activities, and professional care from specialists trained in big cat health and behavior. These environments help maintain the well-being and dignity of captive big cats, aligning with conservation and educational goals.

The Denver Aquarium, while excellent in showcasing marine life, is not appropriately equipped for tigers. Unlike marine animals that thrive in the aquarium's specific environment, terrestrial mammals such as tigers face an unnatural and restrictive habitat that fails to meet their complex needs. Inappropriate housing can lead to severe health issues, increased stress and behavioral problems, such as pacing or excessive grooming—all signs of stress in captive big cats.

Studies have shown that inadequate habitat space and limited social interaction are detrimental to the well-being of large mammals. Tigers in small enclosures with little to engage them mentally or physically are prone to exhibit signs of stress, and sadly, this can shorten their lifespan. An environment tailored to their natural behaviors, space for physical exercise, and enrichment activities are essential for maintaining health and happiness.

We urge the Denver Aquarium to collaborate with a certified wildlife sanctuary or AZA-accredited zoo to relocate these tigers. Such institutions offer environments more conducive to the needs of these magnificent animals, ensuring their long-term well-being. Relocation would not only benefit the tigers immeasurably but also bolster the Denver Aquarium's reputation as an establishment committed to the best practices in animal welfare.
