Asking the school to remove your child from any discussion of white privilege results in getting a lazy and unprofessional letter handed to you. This is a letter to one of our elementary schools after the principal would not answer any questions about the posters and kept directing parents to not follow policy and ask the superintendent directly. I wrote an email to the superintendent and didn't get a response, I also did not get a response from my own child's secondary school principal. I did get an email 23 days later from Lois Miller Executive Assistant Business, on behalf of Lynda Minnaberriat Secretary-Treasurer, telling me to follow policy with a long form letter showing policy 4.20. The response was CC'ed to Teresa Downs. I have not heard a word since. They answer who they want, when they want, and they don't even follow their own policy, yet they direct parents to follow policy and then they ignore them. The parent who wrote the letter did end up having a one on one interview with the principal of Cayoosh. The principal could not answer most questions, she fumbled many times during the meeting, kept directing the parent to "speak to Teresa Downs," and abruptly cut the meeting short. The response letter was handed to the parent with an "I was going to mail this but since you are here," whereas the envelope didn't even have her address on it. To even pen in the date and name in the letter is very lazy and unprofessional. What surprises me is if I asked to have my child removed from sex education classes because I want my child to learn it at home they would comply. If I asked to have my child removed from any religious event because we did not believe in it they would comply. Years ago, I did ask my child's former elementary school to have my son removed from certain discussions and they did comply and he was removed... why is this any different?
