Hello, neighbors — it's time to make your voice heard on the Flock license plate cameras in Sunset Valley.
The Public Safety committee is meeting on Monday, January 12th at 6pm at the Police Department Training Room. The main topic is the renewal of the city's contract with Flock. Come and make a comment at the beginning. I think it's most important to show how many residents oppose the cameras, so no need to say much.
After the Public Safety committee votes on a recommendation, the City Council will likely take up the issue at their meeting on January 20th at 6pm in City Hall. They will decide whether to renew Flock's contract, and it's important to voice your opinion here too — save the date.
Glad to be working with y'all to press this issue in our town—the pressure is having an effect. Please share with your neighbors.
Flock in the news
- In addition to Austin, San Marcos and Hays County, Bend, OR and Flagstaff, AZ are shutting off their Flock cameras after citizen pressure.
- More than 60 Flock cameras (not the type we have) were left open for anyone to view on the web. Flock is not even good at securing itself.
- A Georgia sheriff's employee faces charges for stalking people using the department Flock account. Sunset Valley, like most Flock customers, shares access to its cameras with many other police departments. When you put cameras on the Internet, you lose control of them.
- An interesting read about two citizens' federal lawsuit against Norfolk, VA for being tracked several times a day, every day, by their Flock cameras. Considering that our Flock cameras are positioned at all the roads entering Sunset Valley, this is probably true for us too.
