The Issue

My son Michael is a student at Sudlow Middle School and has a severe allergy to dogs. His disability is so significant that he requires a 504 plan to ensure he can safely attend school without exposure to dogs. Despite this, the school has continuously allowed a dog to be present on the premises, directly impacting Michael’s health and well-being.

Recently, Michael was exposed to the dog at school, resulting in a severe allergic reaction. This reaction was so intense that it necessitated an urgent medical examination, including an echocardiogram, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. As a parent, my primary concern is safeguarding my child’s health while he pursues his education.

The presence of a dog at Sudlow Middle School poses an unnecessary risk not only to Michael but possibly to other students with similar allergies. It’s crucial for schools to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students, respecting individual health needs as outlined in their 504 plans.

We understand the potential benefits of therapy dogs in educational settings. However, these benefits should not come at the expense of the safety and health of students with allergies. We urge Sudlow Middle School to find alternative solutions, such as to integrate completely dog-free zones within the school.

It's time for Sudlow Middle School to prioritize the health and safety of all its students.

Please sign this petition to demand that Sudlow Middle School take immediate action in removing the dog  and protecting students with allergies, ensuring a safe environment for everyone.
