Remove the Confederate Monument from Hollywood Forever

The Issue

Los Angeles is a city of diversity, creativity, and inclusion. Folks from all around the world and all walks of life call it home. Hollywood Forever Cemetery is a place to honor the most influential and famous American cultural icons and many Angelenos spent nights under smoggy stars watching movies among their graves - sharing laughs with strangers and celebrating the art of storytelling. Recently, reports have reminded the public that a confederate monument still stands within the 62 acres of Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Though white supremacy permeates every aspect of American life, there are some whose privilege is not realized and turn to violent extremism of thought and action to advocate their shameful worldview. History has looked back and determined the confederacy's racist and bigoted actions as traitorous - there's no reason to celebrate them or remember them fondly through monuments of any kind. This is why we're calling for the removal of the confederate monument, which is maintained by the Long Beach chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, from the grounds of Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Removing such a divisive monument from our city is imperative. It is far past time to keep traces of white supremacists where they belong - in history books.
