These words on a bold, red Facebook post in Rutherford, TN, leaving the local community in a heartbreaking predicament before the storms.

In the wake of these recent devastating natural disasters—tornadoes, wildfires, and dust storms—that have already left 39 dead, so many families have been left shattered. Now, many must also face the unbearable choice between finding safe shelter after losing their homes, and staying with the pets who bring them comfort. Losing a home to a fire or tornado is heart-wrenching enough; being forced to separate from a cherished companion makes the pain even deeper.

We call on local, state, and federal authorities, as well as private shelter operators, hotels, and rental providers, to temporarily lift pet restrictions in emergency housing. This change is vital for those who need to rebuild their lives without the anguish of leaving their pets behind.

Emergency plans must reflect the reality of human and animal bonds.
