Remove Parental Rights and Name from Birth Certificate for the Safety of Children

The Issue

As a concerned parent, I am deeply troubled by the current laws that allow individuals who have committed serious offenses against children to retain their parental rights and remain named on their child's birth certificate. It is crucial that we prioritize the safety and well-being of our children above all else.

The father of our child has been assessed as being a high risk to children, having pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of threatening to disclose a private sexual photograph. Shockingly, these images involved children as young as 6 and 13 years old. He was sentenced to only 18 weeks in jail, received a restraining order for 7 years, and was made subject to a seven-year sexual harm prevention order.

It is evident that this individual poses an ongoing threat not only to society but specifically to his own child. Allowing him continued access or involvement in our child's life would be detrimental not only psychologically but also physically. The trauma inflicted upon victims of such offenses can have lifelong consequences, affecting their ability to trust others and form healthy relationships.

Research consistently shows that exposure to parental criminal behavior significantly increases the likelihood of negative outcomes for children. These include higher rates of mental health issues, substance abuse problems, academic difficulties, and even future involvement in criminal activities themselves.

Accordingly, it is imperative that we take immediate action by removing parental rights and names from birth certificates when parents are convicted or found guilty beyond reasonable doubt for serious offenses against children. This will serve as an essential protective measure for vulnerable minors who deserve every chance at leading safe and fulfilling lives.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for legislation reform that prioritizes the safety and well-being of our children over the rights of individuals who have demonstrated clear disregard for their welfare. Together, let us ensure that no child is forced to endure the lasting consequences of being connected to a parent who has committed such heinous crimes.
