I have friends who are in the difficult position of needing to balance their school responsibilities with caring for family members who struggle with health issues. Unfortunately, with the recent change in Ontario’s school attendance rules, students are now facing potential penalties and loss of marks simply for putting their families first in times of need. This rule is unfair and does not take into account the diverse challenges many students face outside the classroom.

Consider the students who wake up every day worried about a parent or grandparent who is ill. Imagine the stress they endure knowing that choosing to stay home and provide care could negatively impact their academic future due to a loss of marks. This reality is being faced by many students across Ontario who are now forced to choose between family responsibilities and their education.

The new rule, which penalizes students for missing classes regardless of the circumstances, lacks compassion and understanding of the real-world challenges that students face. According to research, nearly 20% of students in Canada act as caregivers for a family member. This statistic underscores the importance of crafting school policies that reflect the realities of students' lives and do not unfairly penalize those who step up to support their families during critical times.

We are calling on the Ontario Ministry of Education to reconsider this attendance rule and incorporate more flexibility and compassionate exemptions for students who are acting as family caregivers. A more balanced policy could allow school administrators to assess individual situations and grant exceptions where appropriate, rather than implementing a blanket rule that disregards students' personal circumstances.

Educational success should not be defined solely by attendance. Students are not just numbers; they are young individuals managing complex lives, and their schooling should support, not hinder, their growth and contribution to society. Implementing a more understanding and humane policy would not only benefit students but also encourage them to continue striving for success without feeling penalized for their unique responsibilities.

The funding has been also cut, schools won’t have the money to sustain new items, better classrooms, better washrooms, teacher payment, and fixing every problem schools will have, my elementary school was almost on the bottom of the list in terms of money, my school couldn’t keep up with the new amount of money that it had, and they could barely fix any problems for example, one being the washrooms, the washrooms were dirty, 2 urinals and 1 toilet didn’t work, the sinks were barely running any water, and the mirrors were cracked and they couldn’t fix it, and I would hate to see all schools be in that situation.

Please join us in urging the Ontario Ministry of Education to amend this rule and protect the grades and futures of conscientious students who are juggling their education and family responsibilities.
