The Issue

Driving north on the West Side Highway in Manhattan, drivers — including families with children — are confronted with a massive billboard showing a nearly-nude woman lying horizontally across the ad, selling the Novig sports-betting platform under the tagline "Just Sports." This is Novig's national "Just Sports" campaign starring Sydney Sweeney, which has already drawn national criticism from Olympians and women's sports advocates for sexualizing women to sell a gambling product. Whatever one's view of the ad on television, a public highway used by every New Yorker is no place for near-nudity in a betting ad. We call on: 1. Novig — pull this campaign from highway billboards immediately. 2. The outdoor advertising operator — remove the ad under your own content standards for public-facing placements. 3. New York City's elected officials — use every available lever to keep sexually explicit advertising off the city's highways. Our public roadways should not be a venue for near-nudity in gambling ads. Sign if you agree.

There is now a legislative path as well: NY Senate bill S10400, introduced by Senator Nathalia Fernandez, would prohibit billboard advertising of gambling and sports wagering services on outdoor structures visible to the public — exactly the kind of ad described above. Signing this petition also signals support for that effort.

Prominent voices have joined the criticism: Glasgow Women's Aid branded the campaign 'misogynistic,' actress Sharon Stone said Sweeney should 'take responsibility for her actions' ('We can't denigrate women's sports to get men's attention so they can gamble'), and four-time Olympic gold medalist Ariarne Titmus called it 'a kick in the face' to women who dedicated their lives to their sport.
