Remove Mike Smith from Trailer Park Boys
The Issue
When I first watched Trailer Park Boys, I loved the ridiculous humour and familiarity of the characters. Like many I was drawn to "Bubbles," played by Mike Smith, for his love of animals and what seemed to be the moral grounding of the show. However, my enthusiasm turned into disappointment and anger upon learning about multiple and ongoing serious allegations of sexual assault against Smith and how the case was dismissed simply because the victim was too afraid to testify in court.
This week, a judge dismissed a court case against Mike Smith because the survivor/victim was too intimidated to pursue the case. This is a stark reminder of why many victims of sexual assault choose silence over justice, fearing the trauma of the legal process and its aftermath. It is unfair that someone with such allegations can continue to represent a beloved series like Trailer Park Boys without any consequence.
As audiences, we must hold actors accountable for their actions in the same way society expects accountability across all professions. We must demand networks and production companies place ethical behavior over profit and reputation, setting an example for others in the industry. Without this, we are allowing serial perpetrators to continue to have fame and fortune while risking the lives and mental health of those around them.
The ask is clear: remove Mike Smith from Trailer Park Boys.
That show, and the lead actors attached to it, have remained silent for too long on this issue. This is not the first time this has happened, and they have said nothing about women's safety or the ways their colleague has contributed to an ongoing culture of misogyny in Nova Scotian society. Their silence is complicity.
