Remove homework from Holmlia skole
The Issue
As a resident of Holmlia in Oslo and a parent of a student at Holmlia Skole, I am deeply concerned about the current educational workload imposed on our children. Our school prioritizes a substantial number of tests and assignments, pushing students to their limits and leaving them with very little free time to engage in extracurricular activities or simply be children. Homework has become an additional burden, clashing with existing school commitments and leaving students stretched thin.
I have witnessed first-hand how this overwhelming workload has affected my child. The balance between juggling homework, attending to assignments, preparing for frequent tests, and participating in sports is proving to be too much. Many evenings are spent working late into the night, depriving children of much-needed rest and recreation. A student’s emotional and physical well-being should be a priority, and the current situation at Holmlia Skole threatens to undermine it.
A compelling body of research indicates that excessive homework can lead to stress and burnout among students. Studies also show that excessive amounts of homework can have diminishing returns on academic performance, especially when students are already loaded with school assignments and tests. Children need time to rest, engage in family activities, and develop hobbies outside the classroom.
We propose that Holmlia Skole re-evaluates its homework policy, especially in light of the numerous tests and assignments it already requires. By eliminating or significantly reducing homework, our children could better focus on their studies during school hours and have time for rest and personal development after school. This change would not only benefit the students but also create an enriched learning environment where children are more focused and less stressed.
Let us advocate for a healthier, more balanced approach to education for our children at Holmlia Skole. Join me in urging the school's administration to carefully reconsider their homework policy to better support our children's overall growth and happiness.
