The Issue

At Alpharetta High School, a new development has caught the attention and concern of many students and faculty alike. Recently, the school authorities installed two Flock safety cameras at both entrances to the institution. While the intent behind their installation might be rooted in safety and security, these cameras also come with a hefty price tag, ranging from $2,500 to $3,000 each, which begs the question: is this the best use of the school's resources?

Beyond the financial implications, there is a deeper, more pressing issue at play – privacy. The implementation of constant surveillance on students and teachers is causing significant anxiety among the school community. The feeling of being watched at all times creates an environment of distrust and unease, particularly among young individuals who are at a formative stage in their lives.

Numerous reports have surfaced nationwide regarding the misuse of Flock cameras, adding to the apprehensions about their presence in educational environments. Schools should be safe spaces where students feel encouraged and motivated to learn without the overbearing presence of surveillance looming over them.

The Alpharetta Young Democratic Socialists of America stand with those who believe in the sanctity of privacy and are calling for the removal of these cameras from Alpharetta High School. We propose a more balanced approach to student safety that respects individual privacy. This could include measures like increased patrols by human security personnel, community-based safety programs, or efforts to foster stronger relationships between students, teachers, and school administration, enabling a safer environment without invasive surveillance.

Join us in taking a stand for the privacy of students and educators at Alpharetta High School. We urge the administration to prioritize the well-being and trust of its community by removing the flock cameras immediately. Please support this petition and make your voice heard for a safer, more respectful learning environment.
