The Issue

As a 2026 graduate of Albright College, I can say that it's a place I hold close to my heart. The community has some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and the professors provided me with an education far greater than I could've expected. However, there is a clear foundational fault at this college.

- For the sake of finances, the college recently fired many professors, all of whom were deeply loved and poured their lives into their students. This was done via a 10-minute meeting, which is both unprofessional on their part and discourteous to the professors. Many of them have worked at Albright for over a decade, and it seems as though the administration simply tossed them to the curb. When I first applied at Albright, it was boasted that most of the professors hold master's degrees or higher in their field. Now, these individuals will be replaced by adjuncts.

- The college also cut multiple majors and minors. While this is not a unique decision, as multiple other colleges are facing this issue, Albright’s changes are far more extensive and strip the college of what makes it special.  These changes include:
-Full major/minor elimination: Child/Family studies, Classical studies, Creative Writing, Dance, Digital Communications, Digital Media, Digital Studio Art, Film & Video, Holocaust studies, Media studies, Painting, Photography, Public Health, Religious studies, Sculpture, Strategic Communications, Visual Communication Design, and Women & Gender studies
Multiple others have been moved to secondary focuses or minors as well, such as theater and vocal performance.  The total number of programs affected is almost 50.  If you'll notice, most of these majors/minors are the heart and soul of 'liberal arts'.  Albright cannot call themselves a liberal arts college if they remove the arts.

- Students do not have reliable access to healthcare, as the college has decided to outsource to an online platform 'Timelycare'. During its first year of implementation, the platform simply did not work, leaving students with nothing. When the issue was brought up to the administration, they said that it 'worked perfectly fine' and that they 'didn't know what they meant' during a student panel. After the panel, I showed Dr. Ingram-Wallace exactly what we meant, and it was then that she finally stated she'd look into it.  However, even a year later there are still ongoing issues.  Almost every single student asked has been unhappy with the quality and accessibility of basic medical care.  Mental healthcare was outsourced to Timelycare as well.  During my first year at Albright, I had a wonderful therapist that I clicked with so well.  The following year, all therapists were fired.  Now with Timelycare, students are limited in the number of sessions they can have.  As someone who was previously used to seeing a therapist once a week for years, I was now limited to once or twice a month unless I wanted to pay almost $100 out of pocket.

- Starting in Sept 2025, student accommodations took a massive hit with the closure of the student testing center.  Within the first month, all students receiving accommodations got an email stating "Due to limited staffing, the SAA office is not currently providing accommodated testing....Please work with your professor to schedule all exams."  When asked about it, administration reportedly didn't know why we were told that, because it wasn't closed.  This is either incredibly poor miscommunication or shameful dishonesty.  Days later though, an email was sent out saying that it would reopen with limited hours.   These limited hours did not work with many students however, leaving them in distress trying to find some other way to take it.  Many times, professors would actually proctor exams themselves to save students from that distress.

- In fall 2026, Albright switched to 'AI tutoring', firing the student tutors to save money.  Classes cannot be properly taught or trusted with AI, especially higher-level chemistry or math.  Students could no longer learn from other people who previously took the class and instead had to learn from a computer even more than they already have to.  This took income away from students who were using it to pay for their education and removed access to true tutoring.

-Students have also dealt with multiple maintenance failures.  At one point, water safety issues were affecting one of the dorm halls.  Students were told via emails and signs to not use the water until the crew took the signs down.  While the incident wasn't entirely the college's fault, they handled it poorly.  Instead of providing bottled water to the students or coordinating a shower situation with another dorm, Mohn residents were on their own.  A major event occurred in spring 2026, when a massive storm knocked out the power in most of the town.  No generators worked in the dorms or classrooms, only in the basement of the student center.  For two and a half days, students slept in almost 50 degree cold rooms.  The dining staff, professors, etc were incredibly wonderful at caring for us and making sure we were okay, but it felt like mostly crickets from administration at the start of it.  The lack of working generators also costed the science department thousands of dollars in damaged chemicals, reagents, etc.

These are just some of the poor decisions that Debra Townsley, James Gaddy, and Brenda Ingram-Wallace have made in their leadership.  And these are the decisions they will continue to make if they remain in power as student experience continues to deteriorate.  I am calling for their removal of power for the sake of Albright College's survival and the future of its students and professors.
