Valerie's Law has now been passed by the Oireachtas

The Guardianship of Infants and Child Care (Amendment) Bill 2026 (aka "Valerie's Law") successfully completed its final stage in the Oireachtas on Wednesday July 15th.

The bill is now with President Connolly for signing before it becomes law and is added to the Statute Book.

This progress is thanks to the work by Minister Jim O'Callaghan, the Committee for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration chaired by Matt Carthy TD and with welcome cross-party support from all across the Oireachtas in both the Dáil and Seanad, particularly from Holly Cairns TD.

Thanks to all the Ministers, TDs and Senators who have supported this over the years. Thanks also to the media, researchers, domestic violence organisations and general public who have provided advice, support and encouragement throughout.

Particular thanks for the support of people who share personal experience of fatal domestic violence. Valerie's Law focuses on protecting surviving children which is one issue among many facing people in the horrific aftermath of these crimes.

Valerie's Law which ends automatic guardianship for a parent convicted of killing their child's other parent has been one of several important changes made by the Oireachtas this week to protect people from domestic, sexual and gender-based violence.

- Jennie's Law: Passed by the Dáil, creating Ireland's first public register of domestic violence convictions, named for Jennifer Poole.
- New laws on extreme pornography: Cabinet approval secured to criminalise possession, production and distribution of extreme and violent material.
- Sex for rent now criminalized: It's now an offence to offer or advertise accommodation in exchange for sex.
- New Oireachtas committee: A dedicated two-year committee on domestic, sexual and gender-based violence begins work this autumn.

All these changes represent real progress. These changes and more will all require proper resourcing, enforcement, and support with policy, training and awareness across society and frontline organisations.
