Remove breed specific legislation
The Issue
Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is a damaging and ineffective approach to managing public safety in our communities. Rather than addressing the behavior of individual animals, BSL unfairly targets specific breeds, leading to unnecessary restrictions, stigma, and, in some cases, euthanasia of innocent dogs. This legislation fails to consider the real factors contributing to aggressive behavior, such as training, socialization, and environmental influences.
Research has shown that BSL does not improve public safety or prevent dog bites. A study by the American Veterinary Medical Association found no significant decrease in dog bite incidents in areas with BSL compared to those without. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and countless animal behavior experts oppose BSL due to its inherent ineffectiveness and biased nature.
Instead of breed bans, we need comprehensive and humane policies promoting responsible pet ownership. Public education campaigns, enforcing leash laws, and increasing access to affordable training and socialization programs could have a more meaningful impact on community safety. Programs that identify individual aggressive dogs regardless of breed, paired with behavioral assessments, are proven to be more effective.
Residents, pet owners, and animal advocates unite to demand the repeal of Breed Specific Legislation and to replace it with policies that hold irresponsible owners accountable while protecting our beloved pets. Making these changes will ensure communities are both safer and fairer for all breeds.
