Remove Breakdancing from the Olympic Games

The Issue

My story begins with the art of creative street dancing, a form I grew up respecting and admiring. It was always a unique spectacle that fused art and rhythm in a way that no other form of dance ever could. The recent inclusion of breakdancing in the Olympic Games has left me appalled, mourning for the sanctity of this art form that's dear to me.

The joy of breakdancing came from watching its improvisation and creativity, which flourished in the streets of our cities, a raw exchange of energy between performers and the audience. The thrill of unexpected moves, the reactions of the crowd, it was all a part of the experience.

However, the current shift of breakdancing into the Olympics necessitates a standardized scoring system, reducing this spontaneous, vibrant art form to a competitive sport marked by strict regulations, restrictions, and a definitive list of maneuvers meant to please the judges rather than expressing an artist's uniqueness. It also threatens the culture of spontaneity and freedom that defines street dancing.

We are calling on the International Olympic Committee to rethink their decision, to consider the essence of breakdancing that was once a proud, spontaneous, creative street art, now at risk of losing its charm and spirit. We implore the IOC to remove breakdancing from the Olympic games and maintain the purity of this art form.
