Remove anti-abortion ads from BC Transit buses
Remove anti-abortion ads from BC Transit buses
The Issue
All across British Columbia, public transport serves as a vital connection point for thousands, bringing communities together and providing access for all to work, education, healthcare, and other essential services. Recently, there has been a surge in anti-abortion advertisements appearing on BC Transit buses, sparking controversy and discomfort among many passengers and residents in the area.
These ads, which carry strong messages against abortion, are deeply divisive and can be distressing for individuals who have undergone or considered the procedure, as well as for those who firmly support the right to choose. Public spaces such as buses should remain neutral, inclusive, and respectful environments for everybody, regardless of their personal beliefs or experiences.
In recent years, studies have shown that the majority of Canadians support the availability of legal abortion. According to a 2020 Ipsos poll, approximately 77% of Canadians support women having access to safe and legal abortion options. By allowing these ads on public transit, BC Transit is implicitly endorsing a message that stands in stark contrast to the values upheld by the majority, potentially inciting fear, shame, and division.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees both freedom of expression and the right to security and equality, yet it is imperative to recognize the responsibility of public entities like BC Transit not to promote content that could undermine these rights, particularly regarding personal and sensitive issues like reproductive health.
We call upon BC Transit to re-evaluate their policies concerning advertising space and remove the anti-abortion messages from their buses. Instead, BC Transit can prioritize ad content that is inclusive, informational, or promotes local businesses and community services that unite rather than divide.
Sign this petition to urge BC Transit to take action now; advocate for a public transport system that respects and reflects the diversity, dignity, and unprejudiced nature of British Columbia society. Your voice can help uphold a respectful, neutral community space for all who travel on these buses every day. Make your stand today.
