The Issue

Over the past two semesters, Florida State's chemistry department has adopted AI voiceover for their flipped classroom lectures in gen chem 1 and 2. As a first semester freshman, I was unaware of this until very recently and I thought It might not be as bad as what I was being told. I was wrong. Within the first four required lecture videos, the AI consistently messed up the pronunciation of words, garbled sentences, gave incorrect units of measurement, and didn't mess up on numbers simply because there weren't enough of them for it to mess up. These classes are so so so important to my future as a biochemistry major, but I'm of the belief that I'm not the only one who's learning is being negatively impacted. Everyone at FSU deserves a quality education especially considering what an important and all encompassing subject chemistry is, and equally because of the amount we pay in tuition and class materials. I refuse to accept the rhetoric that this choice is beneficial to the student population taking general chemistry and is aiding in the learning process. All this to say, I'm starting this petition for those who would like to see change within Florida State's chemistry department in regards to this choice. while the change may not be immediate, even a small cluster of us making our concern and disappointment heard can lead to change for the next group of people taking these courses. Ask yourselves, is this the quality of education you deserve?
