Remove 10% GST from Domestic Electricity on over 10M Australian Households

The issue

We, like many other Australians, are really struggling under the crippling effects of the cost of living CRISIS amidst inflation and a bitter economic climate in 2025. It's undeniably clear that our rising power prices are excessively high and taxing them further with the 10% GST on our most essential utility, domestic electricity, only serves to exacerbate the strain on our shrinking budgets.

Electricity is NOT a luxury; it's an absolute necessity for modern living.

Just think about it, without electricity, we wouldn't have refrigeration for our food, heating for the cold nights, or light to banish the darkness – let alone power our digital needs like computers and smartphones in today's online age. It's our most essential service, and it’s time the Australian government recognizes it as such by removing the 10% GST on our domestic electricity.

Over the past three years alone, electricity prices have risen by over 39% according to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) in their DMO determinations, when the Government promised us a reduction of $275 on our domestic power bills. Then to pay another 10% GST extra penalty on this increase is daylight robbery.

All Australian households, and especially Seniors on fixed incomes or piddly pensions, can ill afford this tax, and it feels like a government cash grab that puts our needs last. Astoundingly, this excessive GST contributes merely 1/300th, or less than 0.4%  of Australia's annual tax revenue, a negligible amount to the government but a crippling expense to most of us.

We call on the Australian Government to prioritize affordability and fairness by removing the unfair GST from our domestic electricity. This extremely simple change will make a meaningful difference in the lives of over 10 million Australians households for years to come.

Not just a one-year $300 temporary rebate band-aide.

Remove the 10% GST on our Domestic Electricity on July 1, 2025.
