The Issue

I believe it is critical that renewable energy initiatives, like wind power, do not come at the expense of community safety and well-being. Setback laws, which are designed to establish minimum safe distances between wind turbines and residential areas, were enacted to protect against issues such as noise pollution, shadow flicker, ice throw, and even structural failure. However, under current law, turbines installed before these setback standards were implemented may be “grandfathered in.”

In Willacy County, Texas, there are wind turbines constructed prior to the updated setback regulations. Many of these turbines sit alarmingly close to homes, some as near as 600 feet in the towns of Sebastian and Lyford. Families in these communities are living with constant shadow flicker, disruptive noise, and persistent vibrations, greatly impacting their quality of life. Moreover, the looming threat of ice throw and potential structural failures adds to their daily concerns and anxieties.

The presence of these turbines is not just an inconvenience—it is a very real safety issue. Children are unable to play outside without the incessant noise, adults find it difficult to rest or relax after long workdays, and every winter brings the ominous threat of ice falling from above. These are challenges no family should have to endure, especially when living in their own homes.

It's time we act now to prioritize the safety and peace of our local communities by demanding the relocation of these turbines to sites that meet current safety standards. This is not an attack on renewable energy, but a call to implement it responsibly, safeguarding the health and well-being of our residents.

We call upon the local and state authorities, energy companies, and renewable energy advocates to take immediate action. This includes reassessing current turbine locations, reviewing their compliance with updated safety regulations, and planning for their relocation to ensure they no longer pose a threat to local communities.

The safety and quality of life for the families of Willacy County should be at the forefront of any renewable energy policy. Let's come together to demand change and promote safe, sustainable energy practices.

Please sign this petition to support the removal and relocation of these unsafe wind turbines to protect our communities and ensure a safer future for all.
