The Issue

BISHOPVILLE, SC

Bishopville Fireworks is planning a Firework Show on July 4, 2026  at the Lee County Airport/Butters Field which is directly adjacent to their HIGH KILL animal shelter and a mile or so from Paisley’s Bunny Rescue. County Council has reportedly endorsed this and has been unwilling to listen to the public’s concerns and change venues. Attempts to have the show relocated have been futile as the members of BF and county council don’t seem to care.

These animals, already traumatized by their past experiences, are now facing an unnecessary ordeal if the planned firework show proceeds as scheduled near their current sanctuary. Originally, the public was told they would have fosters for all the animals. Now they are falsely alleging the shelter is soundproof.

The loud and unpredictable noises from fireworks are known to induce acute stress and panic in animals. According to studies, animals experience heightened anxiety and fear when exposed to sudden loud sounds, with heart rates escalating, and instances of shock sometimes leading to death. The fireworks can turn into a night of terror for these innocent animals who seek refuge with considerable trust in human benevolence.

It's not just pets; many wildlife species are similarly distressed by such events. Birds, for instance, are disoriented by the flashes and booms, which may cause them to abandon nests and their young. Moreover, rabbits at the bunny rescue and numerous other animals at the shelter could suffer irreversible stress or harm.

Why are we subjecting them to this? There are viable alternatives available. We urge the authorities to move the location of this event to a more suitable venue that is distant from any animal sanctuaries or to consider cancelling the event altogether in consideration of their welfare.

Now is not the time to falter. Let us step up and ensure that our actions align with our values of kindness and empathy.

Please sign this petition to show your support for moving the firework show or cancelling it to protect the animals at our local rescue centers. Your voice can make a difference for those who cannot advocate for themselves. Let us be their advocates and champions, reinforcing our role as protectors, not perpetrators of pain. Together, we can effectuate a more compassionate decision for our community.

This location is also near woods and fuel tanks for the planes. Permitting this to go on is reckless and irresponsible.
