As someone who has witnessed numerous near-misses at the Newport Cenotaph, I am deeply concerned about the safety of our veterans and public who attend ceremonies there. The cenotaph is currently located at a busy bus terminal, creating a dangerous environment for everyone involved. Too many times I have watched people step off the footpath into the path of buses.

It's not just about safety - it's also about respect. Our cenotaph deserves a peaceful and dignified location where we can honor our veterans without distraction or danger. Paine Reserve offers such an environment and is more suitable for this purpose.

According to Transport Accident Commission data, pedestrian accidents account for 14% of road fatalities in Victoria (source: TAC). This statistic underlines how real and pressing this issue is.

We propose that local authorities move our cenotaph from its current location to Paine Reserve. This will not only provide a safer environment but also allow us to pay proper respect to our veterans during ceremonies.
