The Issue

Gravy, a beloved wild turkey, has become a celebrity on Aquidneck Island. When he was hit by a car, Middletown police helped rescue him and sent him to Congress of the Birds where he was nursed back to health. However, the state recently relocated Gravy to a place too close to traffic, and those scenes, captured in a Facebook Live reel, show Gravy challenging trucks and cars on a 4 lane highway and have highlighted the urgent need to ensure Gravy's safety and the well-being of residents.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RI DEM) can take decisive action to rectify this situation by relocating Gravy to the Congress of the Birds. This sanctuary provides a natural habitat where Gravy would be protected while allowing him to live his life.

Wildlife management professionals agree that human-wildlife conflicts can often be mitigated through strategic relocations. According to a study by the National Wildlife Research Center, relocating wildlife to suitable habitats results in a marked decrease in human-animal incidents, thereby fostering a harmonious coexistence.

By relocating Gravy, we are not only prioritizing his safety and health but also promoting a culture of kindness and respect towards wildlife. Let's influence RI DEM to take this compassionate step for Gravy, ensuring his welfare while maintaining public safety.

Support this petition to urge the RI DEM to relocate Gravy safely to the Congress of the Birds and exemplify responsible and humane wildlife management. Please sign the petition to make this vision a reality.
