Relocate CitiBike Racks from Streets to Wide Sidewalks in Washington Heights

The Issue

As a resident of Washington Heights facing daily challenges caused by CitiBike racks, I'm prompted to speak out. We've seen our designated parking areas rapidly taken over by these racks. It's not just about missing out on parking, it's also about the extra hours of driving in circles in the dead of night seeking an elusive spot. Not to mention, this increased vehicular movement escalates the risk of accidents involving pedestrians, adding to concerns around safety and well-being.

Moreover, these additional cars cruising around are compounding the air pollution. The same bike racks we first hailed as environmentally friendly are now indirectly contributing to the degradation of our local atmosphere. Enhancing this complex issue, waste and recycling collection services are being hindered, unable to efficiently execute their essential tasks.

We call for an immediate solution: relocate these bike racks to wide sidewalks, where they can still serve their purpose without infringing upon residents' rights to secure parking. This action will also meet the overarching goal of enhancing public safety, reducing pollution, and facilitating trash/recycling collection.

Recognizing the essentiality of cycling infrastructure, particularly in our city, we are not advocating for the elimination of CitiBikes. However, preferential placement of racks shouldn't come at such a high cost to residents.

Join us in this petition to restore balance and fairness to the residents of Washington Heights. Let's urge authorities to relocate these CitiBike racks from streets to wide sidewalks. My neighbors and I on 160th Street have been directly affected. Sign the petition today! Please Share! Please Post! Thank you.
