Relocate Adult Education Programs from Elementary Schools in York Region

Relocate Adult Education Programs from Elementary Schools in York Region
The Issue
As parents of children who attend a local public elementary school, we have become aware of concerns that can arise when adult education programs, such as ESL classes, are hosted within the same buildings during regular instructional hours. This petition is not just about logistics; it is about ensuring that our schools remain safe, secure, and wholly dedicated to the education and well-being of our young children.
Elementary schools are specifically designed to cater to the needs of young students. These facilities must prioritize creating a secure, child-centric environment where children can learn and thrive without distractions or potential safety concerns. Hosting unrelated adult programs, such as ESL classes, within these schools disrupts this focus and raises pressing issues regarding the supervision of shared spaces.
There are concerns about non-educational adults accessing the building during school hours, increasing the risk of potential safety breaches or security lapses, and diverting attention from our children’s educational needs. Schools are pillars of our community, meant to be sanctuaries where our children feel safe, protected, and supported.
While there is no doubt that adult education programs serve a vital purpose and benefit our community broadly, we must separate these activities from the elementary school environment. We propose exploring alternative venues for adult education classes that do not interfere with elementary schools’ primary mission.
Potential solutions include utilizing community centers, public libraries, or high school facilities that can accommodate adult programs without compromising student safety or educational quality. Additionally, these venues can offer flexibility in scheduling to meet adult learners’ needs without impacting elementary schools' regular functions.
We wholeheartedly support adult education and want to ensure that it flourishes in appropriate settings. However, the sanctity of our children's learning environment must remain our utmost priority. We urge community leaders and decision-makers to take this matter seriously and relocate adult education programs outside of elementary schools during regular instructional hours.
Please sign this petition to help protect our children’s educational environment and ensure the security and proper focus of our elementary schools during regular school hours.
