Hi everyone, you might have seen that the Religious Discrimination Bill was made public and yesterday the Prime Minister introduced it to Parliament. Despite some much-needed changes, it still contains elements that go well beyond protecting religious freedoms.
The Bill still fails to protect all of us equally. The 'statements of belief' provision is still there, and new issues have been introduced - including provisions overriding state and territory discrimination laws. That means a person with a disability could be told by a support worker that their disability is 'caused by the devil', or that someone's HIV status is 'punishment from God'. That's what this Bill would allow.
The Prime Minister has promised a Senate inquiry, but that will likely take place AFTER the Bill passes the lower house. We need proper scrutiny of this Bill, and that includes letting MPs from both houses hear from the people whose lives will be affected by these sweeping changes.
We all deserve to live free from discrimination, but this Bill goes well beyond that.
Together, we've already helped pressure the Morrison Government to remove some of the worst elements of the Handmaid's Tale Bill! But there's still more work to be done.
I know we can keep using our voices to protect women, people with disabilities, LGBTIQA+ people, and anyone else who would be the victim of this Bill.
Thank you,
Emma Linton
