#01- "The community has a letter from Epic Games saying that they give us permission to have the server if it is found."
A former Sega employee has shared that he worked on maintaining the servers for the Unreal Tournament game on the Dreamcast and claimed to have copies of these files in his personal backups, or hope that it does. This leads us to believe that it is possible, now more than ever, to revive the online experience of this game beloved by so many fans around the world.
Unreal Tournament has earned a legion of passionate fans, and the Dreamcast version has left its mark on many players' memories for its electrifying battles and vibrant community. However, since the servers were shut down, players have lost this vital part of the gaming experience, something that could be restored if the server code or binary files were released by Sega or those who worked on this project.
We urge Sega and the former employees involved in maintaining these servers to consider releasing the code or binary files necessary so that Dreamcast players can once again enjoy the online battles that made history.
This request not only fulfills the nostalgic desire of many gamers around the world, but also contributes to the preservation of video game history, allowing this unique gaming experience to be revived for new generations to explore.
Help us make this captivating dream possible. Support our cause by signing this petition and share it with other video game enthusiasts. Together, we can make a difference.
Obstacles encountered in attempts to adapt the "UT99 PC" server:
Assets: All visual, audio, and gameplay resources present structural and coding differences compared to the PC version.
Player models: Use a proprietary format with a distinct internal structure, making direct conversion impossible.
Items: Present complete differences in geometry, textures, and references, incompatible with the original PC packages.
UnrealEd: The official tool has critical compatibility flaws, including crashes when opening files due to proprietary checksums.
Maps: On the Dreamcast, loading is segmented into blocks, using a proprietary format to circumvent the console's RAM limitations; this breaks compatibility with original PC maps.
IP (Internet Protocol) Policies: Certain network communication issues can be mitigated via iptables rules, but this does not resolve the absence of the thousands of original assets required for full functionality.
Without access to and adaptation of the entire original Dreamcast asset set—not just the maps—functional restoration is impractical.
