To this day, thousands of players are avid fans of the Factions multiplayer mode included in the original Last of Us and Last of Us Remastered. This multiplayer experience, which creatively utilized the atmosphere and iconic third person combat of the revered single-player campaign, has built a strong international community since its 2013 release. However, this version of Factions is in dire need of new content and maintenance.

For over six years, fans desperately requested updates or a sequel, as either a patch into Last of Us Part One/Part Two or a live service project maintained by a studio separate from Naughty Dog.

In 2020, Naughty Dog acknowledged the fervor and commitment of the fans by issuing a statement promising fans the next step in the Factions journey. This statement fueled anticipation in the community, with players eagerly awaiting the further development of a game they have cherished for years. However, this proved insufficient for the studio and Sony PlayStation, who cancelled the game in late 2023. 

In the intervening years, the gaming landscape has evolved. Third-person PvE and PvP multiplayer shooters have proven immensely popular, demonstrating a clear market and audience for a refreshed and expanded version of Factions. Leveraging these trends could inject new life into a celebrated franchise and deliver a new, unforgettable experience to multiplayer and PlayStation fans.

We urge Naughty Dog, Sony PlayStation and all stakeholders involved to fulfill their 2020 promise and release the next chapter of Factions online. Not only would this honor the dedication and passion of a committed fan base, but it would also capitalize on the evolving gaming market, ensuring that 'The Last of Us' remains at the forefront of multiplayer gaming experiences.
