My loved one Lemartrell Smith is currently incarcerated at USP Leavenworth where understaffing is rampant and life-threatening incidents are alarmingly common. There is a constant lock down due to high life threatening actions occurring.There is a palpable concern each and every day that the next person to lose their life could be someone I care about. Unfortunately, the statistics corroborate my dire fears as increasing inmate deaths have been recorded -A stark implication of inhumane living conditions.

It's important to state that those who are being subjected to this dismal existence are nonviolent offenders with sentences of two years or less. Clearly, the punishment doesn't fit the crime. Release of these inmates could help alleviate the pressure on the staff, reduce inmate density thus directly decreasing the risk of fatalities.
