Now, on to the petition.

THE WHY:

It's been 15 years (as of 2023) since Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released. Back in 2017, a potential Hellboy 3 was shot down because of 2 factors that we knew about. First, Guillermo del Toro was busy making other films, and second, there were already plans in place to reboot the franchise with a new leading actor. Obviously, that reboot culminated in the failed 2019 reboot.

When the reboot came out, I struggled between wanting to be excited to see new Hellboy content and wishing the film had been a third installment of GDT's saga without all the needless blood, gore, and language in the reboot. 

More recently, another reboot was announced and has already finished filming, under the title "Hellboy: The Crooked Man". While it appears to be a more faithful adaptation of the comics, it was yet another nail in the proverbial coffin for Hellboy 3 and a slap in the face to the fans who hoped 2019 had sent Mignola and GDT a wake-up call. I'm trying to be excited for it, but I'm afraid the world is tired of seeing new Hellboy reboots just to have them flop.

In 2021, Hellboy actor Ron Perlman broke the long-growing ice with a statement about Hellboy 3. He said, "There's always a little ember, that lives deep within me, that says maybe one day Guillermo will wake up and say, 'You know what? We need to finish this trilogy.'" It was that statement that helped start the Hellboy 3 movement.

In 2022, Ron Perlman once again spoke out on Hellboy 3, this time giving his personal opinion. "Am I eager to do Hellboy 3?" Perlman asks, "No, I'm 71 years old. But we owe this to the fans, and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion." He goes on to say, "So Guillermo, if you're reading, I'm not done pounding you to get this thing done."

In 2023, Guillermo del Toro announced that he would shift his career to focus primarily on animation, a medium in which he is incredibly talented, but claimed to have a few more live-action films he wants to make.

Again in 2023, at the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts premiere, Ron Perlman said, "I was very happy with the version that Guillermo and I involved ourselves with. I thought we killed it, we knocked it out of the park." And when asked about the upcoming (re)reboot, he said, "What happens with the character and the franchise and the periphery of any of that is none of my business. I prefer to just dwell in the feeling that I continue to have having played him and having played him for one of the great directors."

WHY NOW?

15 years have passed since Hellboy 2 at the time this petition started. 19 years since Hellboy 1. Sequels to so many movies are being made now, from Top Gun to Star Wars, Jurassic Park to Indiana Jones, and so many more are on the way. The difference between Hellboy 3 and these films is simple - these films were never directly intended (for the most part) to have a sequel. Hellboy 2 was made with a sequel (threequel?) in mind. The story Guillermo del Toro weaved throughout the first 2 movies is amazing on its own, but desperately needs a cap on the end.

With the upcoming Crooked Man reboot on the horizon, you may still be asking, "Why now?" And the answer is simple. Because if this doesn't happen now, and Crooked Man flops like the 2019 reboot (confusingly just titled "Hellboy"), the cinematic future, and even the future of the character in general, will be in jeopardy.

THE HOW:

This petition is simple: it's a petition to bring the original Hellboy back. Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman, and so many others have voiced their desire to make Hellboy 3, and this petition is the chance to get that started. But it all depends on you - the fans around the world who have been waiting for so long for the epic conclusion of the movies we love so much. Just by signing and sharing this petition, you could bring the world one step closer to that goal. We need your help, desperately.

As John Myers said in Hellboy, "What makes a man a man? A friend of mine once wondered. Is it his origins? The way he comes to life? I don't think so. It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them."
