Reject VicPD's budget increase & fund community programs, services, & supports!
The Issue
The City of Victoria has released the 2026-2030 Draft Financial Plan. The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) is demanding a 14%, $11 million budget increase for 2026 for a total budget of $90 Million (over 25% of the total city budget!). And the city is gearing up to give them everything they want while making millions of dollars of cuts to community programs, services and supports.
The Victoria Police Department costs the most money per capita of any police department in British Columbia. Every year, they are allotted more and more money in the name of "community safety", while critical municipal services that actually keep our communities safe are continually cut and underfunded - including but not limited to the public library, sustainable public transportation, affordable and accessible housing, community grants towards poverty reduction initiatives, traffic safety measures including crosswalks, and more.
City Council is set to meet on November 20th for police budget discussions.
Sign this petition before then to let City Council know that the community they serve wants them to reject VicPDs proposed 14% budget increase, including hiring 25 more officers, and to put that money into the community supports and services that actually keep people safe!
