Inaugural Meeting of the West Side Coalition of Oakland Park

The new West Side Coalition of Oakland Park held its inaugural meeting this past Wednesday. The primary topic of discussion was the Covenant House shelter proposal.

  • Of the 642 people served last year …
    • Only 51 (8%) moved to stable housing – this means 92% of their clients left the shelter still unhoused
    • Only 116 (18%) gained or maintained employment – this means 82% of their clients left the shelter unemployed
  • Financial statistics
    • On their most recent IRS form 990, they reported that they spent $1,164,514 on management and fundraising expenses.
    • The total net income from each of the last three reported years was:
      • 2020 - $2,052,714
      • 2021 - $2,090,755
      • 2022 - $751,832
      • Total net income of $4,900,301 – money they saved instead of spending on services

CH Application Will Be Reviewed by the DRC on Thu Apr 10 @ 10am

The Covenant House project is on the agenda for the Development Review Committee meeting this week. The developer will present its updated site plan, and the DRC will decide if it satisfies the requirements of our code of ordinances or not. The beginning of the meeting is open for public comments.
