Reintroduce the BCG vaccine in Ireland's immunisation schedule

Reintroduce the BCG vaccine in Ireland's immunisation schedule
The Issue
All children born in 2015 and after in Ireland are growing up without the crucial protection against tuberculosis (TB) that the BCG vaccine provides. As a parent, the fear of this deadly disease, which I hoped would be a history lesson for my child, is now a real threat. TB is rife, not only in far-off lands but here at home. Our children deserve better - they deserve the protection the BCG vaccine can afford against this insidious disease.
In recent years, Ireland has witnessed an alarming rise in TB cases, as highlighted by recent news reports. Contrary to previous beliefs and assurances, TB was never truly defeated, and its resurgence is putting a strain on our already stretched healthcare system. High levels of immigration and increased population mobility have reintroduced TB into our lives, and clinics across the country are struggling to manage the influx of new cases effectively. It's evident that our prior decision to remove the BCG vaccine from the immunisation schedule was premature and dangerous.
Statistics from health authorities indicate that the number of TB cases is rising at a troubling pace. Furthermore, with bacteria increasingly becoming resistant to antibiotics, relying solely on treatment rather than prevention is short-sighted. The claim of a BCG vaccine shortage must be revisited, and solutions found to secure the health of our population.
The reintroduction of the BCG vaccine into our national vaccination schedule is an urgent matter. It is not just about reverting to old practices; it is about acknowledging the threats we currently face and taking preventive action. By protecting our children today, we safeguard our nation's tomorrow.
I urge the Health Service Executive (HSE) and relevant stakeholders to re-evaluate their stance and act swiftly to bring the BCG vaccine back into routine immunisation for the sake of all children and future generations. We cannot afford any more excuses or delays. Please support this call to action and stand with us in helping to protect our communities.
Sign this petition to demand the reinstatement of the BCG vaccine as a priority in Ireland's immunisation programme. Our children's health depends on it.
