Roughly 16,272 murders were committed in the United States during 2008.   Of these, about 10,886 or 67% were committed with firearms.   At the current homicide rate, roughly one in every 240 Americans will be murdered with the use of firearms this year.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) (or Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act) was a subtitle of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a federal law in the United States that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms, so called "assault weapons". There was no legal definition of "assault weapons" in the U.S. prior to the law's enactment. The 10-year ban was passed by Congress on September 13, 1994, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton that same day.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban was allowed to expire on September 13, 2004. There have been multiple attempts to revive the ban, but to date no bill has made it the floor of either house of Congress for a vote.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

We call upon the members of Congress and the President of the United States to take firm, decisive action in the wake of this latest national tragedy. We call upon our politicians to stand up to the bullying tactics of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other so-called 'gun advocacy' lobbying groups. We call upon our lawmakers to enact common sense legislation that protects the rights of law-abiding gun owners while protecting the rights of all other law-abiding citizens from becoming victims of gun-related violence. We call for a renewed public dialogue during this time of collective reflection.
