The Issue

Kids go home every night of the week to struggle on their IXLs and their weekly math homework. Having someone at school to help would probably make a significant difference in their academic performance and overall well-being. At Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center (BUGC) in Bourbonnais, IL, students need more than just classroom learning; they need structured, dedicated time for completing their assignments with the possibility of getting immediate assistance.

Study hall, even if not for a full period, can provide students the opportunity to ask questions, receive mentorship, and work collaboratively with their peers. The absence of study hall means that many students are left to fend for themselves once the school day is over, leading to frustration and a lack of understanding in critical subjects.

Research shows that students who have structured times in school for independent study tend to perform better academically. According to a study from the National Education Association, students with access to resources and assistance during study times are more likely to succeed. Furthermore, having a designated time for study within the school environment helps students manage their workload better, reducing stress and enhancing their learning experience.

Bringing back study hall, even as a shortened session, could alleviate parental anxiety and empower students to tackle their homework with more confidence. It’s a small change that could yield significant academic and emotional benefits, fostering a learning environment where students at BUGC feel supported.

For example, I’ve heard many many people talking about their struggles at home with homework because their parents don’t know how to do it. I’ve had this problem multiple times as well myself. Once on IXL, I had 300+ questions answered and 2+ hours on one. Having a friend or peer to help you at school would really be appreciative to students.

As my vows of being BUGC’s Student Council’s Vice President, I said I would try to make study hall reinstated. I’m taking everyone’s or almost everyone’s help into making this vow a reality. I work hard and I like to stick to what I have promised.

We urge the administration of Bourbonnais Upper Grade Center to consider the reinstatement of study halls to address this crucial need for their students. Your support in signing this petition can help us make this a reality, enabling better academic outcomes and enhancing student well-being at BUGC. Please sign this petition to advocate for the restored study hall sessions at BUGC.
