Over the years I have gained experience in every aspect of law enforcement, from patrol and traffic to special operations and tactical teams. Experience counts, especially when you’re in a critical high stress incident.
With experience comes the training and knowledge to be able to recognize when something isn’t quite right, or isn’t effective, or even just needs to be adjusted a little. You know when to ask what and how to do it.
The problem is, sometimes leaders don’t want to be leaders. They want to be managers and tyrants who have their orders carried out at all times without question or hesitation.
If a leader is afraid of questions then perhaps they shouldn’t be a leader. You should be able to lead by example and lead competent people to do the best job they can do for your agency.
Leaders should be able to answer questions to both the public and their own employees. Anything less is not transparent and is a disservice to the community and the agency.
