As a concerned parent in Howell Township, New Jersey, I was troubled to hear about the recent decision by the Howell Township Public School System to restrict students to using only plastic water bottles. Our family, like many others, has chosen metal and glass water bottles for the health and environmental benefits they provide. The move to only allow plastic may seem trivial, but it is deeply concerning for multiple reasons.

First, studies have shown that certain plastic bottles can leach harmful chemicals, such as BPA (Bisphenol A), into the water. BPA exposure has been linked to numerous health issues, including hormonal disruptions and developmental problems in children. Schools can implement safety checks to ensure all bottles are suitable for school use by verifying that metal and glass bottles adhere to specific standards. Moreover, offering educational programs about the importance of sustainable practices can help nurture responsible habits in students.

We urge Howell Township Public School officials to reconsider this ruling and to allow students to continue bringing metal and glass water bottles. By doing so, we not only safeguard the health of our children but also contribute positively to the environment.
