Reinstate EBT payments at Helping Hands Chico

Reinstate EBT payments at Helping Hands Chico
The Issue
Many residents of our vibrant Chico, CA community, including myself, rely heavily on the local store, Helping Hands, for our grocery shopping needs. This store serves as a convenient and vital resource for countless families, providing a diverse range of products that meet our day-to-day necessities. However, one critical shortcoming hinders its full potential as a community cornerstone—the ability to accept EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) payments.
For those unfamiliar, EBT is often the lifeline for many low-income families and individuals who may otherwise struggle to afford basic living essentials. With the increasing cost of living, more people in our neighborhood are turning to governmental assistance programs to make ends meet. Helping Hands accepting EBT payments would not only ease financial stresses but also widen the access to nutritious food for many struggling families.
In Chico, 13.7% of individuals live below the poverty line, and access to stores that accept EBT payments is crucial for their survival and well-being. Many neighboring towns have adopted policies to make local retailers inclusive of EBT payments and have seen tangible benefits, including increased business from low-income residents and more equitable access to essential goods.
I urge the USDA and local policymakers to recognize the essential nature of this business to our community. Making this change would be ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their financial status, have equal access to healthy, affordable food options.
Please support our efforts in prompting action from the USDA to allow EBT payments—let's make a difference in our community and help provide sustenance to those who need it most. Your signature on this petition can amplify our voices and drive this necessary change.
