Reinstate Dr Cartland to serve Cornwall again
The Issue
Reinstate Dr David Cartland and address concerns about the weaponisation of medical regulation
Dr David Cartland is a much-loved Cornish doctor who became an outspoken advocate for informed consent, bodily autonomy and the principle of “first, do no harm” during the COVID-19 pandemic. He questioned aspects of prevailing medical and public-health policy and sought to advocate for patients who shared concerns about vaccination, treatment and informed consent. He committed no crime, and never hurt a patient.
We believe his case raises serious questions about whether professional regulatory processes can be exploited to silence or marginalise doctors who challenge prevailing consensus.
During proceedings, Dr Cartland raised concerns about coordinated online activity by individuals he associated with the so-called “Mutton Crew”, including alleged connections to the British Army’s 77th Brigade. The existence, role and significance of those alleged connections remain matters of public controversy and should be independently examined rather than assumed.
We therefore call for an independent review of Dr Cartland’s case, including the circumstances surrounding complaints and referrals, the evidence relied upon, and any evidence of coordinated or systematic targeting.
We call on the GMC to restore Dr Cartland’s registration where an independent review concludes that continued erasure is not necessary or proportionate to protect patients or the public.
We further call for the restoration of his ability to obtain appropriate DBS clearance and for the lifetime FA ban to be reviewed and lifted where the legal and safeguarding criteria for such action are satisfied.
Dr Cartland should not be permanently excluded from his profession merely because he expressed controversial views or challenged prevailing medical opinion. Legitimate patient-safety concerns must be distinguished from retaliation, harassment or misuse of regulatory processes.
We ask for transparency, independent scrutiny and a fair opportunity for Dr Cartland to return to practice.
