The issue

In recent years, Canberra residents and those in the surrounding Australian Capital Territory have had limited access to international travel options directly from their local airport. Prior to the cessation of direct flights from Canberra to Singapore, Singapore Airlines provided a vital link for travelers, facilitating convenient access to international destinations for both leisure and business purposes.

With the removal of this direct route, passengers are currently forced to travel to Sydney or Melbourne, incurring additional travel time and expenses that could be avoided. This not only imposes inconvenience but also diminishes Canberra's connectivity to the rest of the world, hindering economic progress and cultural exchange. There are about 47k Asian born living in Canberra (according to Census 2021), if we assume 50% of those will be travelling to visit their extended family and overseas family can be expected to visit annually, we will end up with at least about 1k trip (return) per week. This % can be improved by this direct route as each traveller will be saving at least 9 hours and cost travelling to Sydney.

Singapore Airlines had been a wonderful partner in connecting Canberra to a global hub, allowing our residents to benefit from Singapore's extensive network. The demand for international travel is rebounding post-pandemic, and now is the time to reinstate these flights. The resumption would align with efforts to bolster tourism and business exchanges, benefiting both Canberra and Singapore economically.

According to a 2022 report by the Canberra Business Chamber, reinstating this route could boost local economic activity by up to 15% annually. Additionally, Canberra Airport is well-equipped to handle the inflow of international arrivals, having upgraded their facilities recently to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for all travelers.

To make the math works, Singapore Airline will need about 4k regular traveller per week on this route, Businesses, Importer & exporter, Government agencies, Tourism will be able to fill that gap easily!

We urge Singapore Airlines to reconsider this decision in light of the potential benefits to both regions. By reinstating the direct flight from Canberra to Singapore, we would be restoring an essential connection that promises economic growth, cultural enrichment, and increased convenience for countless travelers.

We suggest that Singapore Airlines should allow passengers to book 3 years in advance for the first time of reopening to realise the full potential of this route. We also suggest that Singapore Airlines should work more closely with local businesses to promote this route: Universities (ANU, UC, UNSW, CIT); Import & export businesses, Government agencies, Tourism.
