Mise à jour sur la pétitionReinstate Delta Recreation Center Hours - Sign Petition - No Donations NeededSo much for the will of the people

I must disclose that I am both disappointed and disgusted by Delta's city council.  Over the course of a few meetings, it has become painfully apparent that we have an "echo chamber" acquiescent to the City Manager with little deliberation, minimal dissenting opinions, and rare displays of critical thinking.

The Rec Center Petition (despite having several hundred signatures) was known about yet ignored for months before receiving acknowledgement.  Despite public outcry, council members have elected to dismiss the matter.  So much for the will of the people.

I would suggest a boycott of the facility, but I recognize that any reduced attendance would only be used by the "powers at be" to justify further reductions in hours.

So, everyone knows the truth:

  1. The recreation center (already funded through an obligatory city sales tax) is closed on Sundays to reduce city expenses $962 a week, approx. 50k a year.
  2. The city manager's salary has increased from 125k to over 180k in just a few years.
  3. Council members now get expense accounts under the new city charter.
  4. City employees and council members get to play free rounds of golf.

Bottom line, we need a different city manager.  City council appoints the city manager, and I do not see meaningful change without at least 2 new councilmen / council women.  Sadly, Mayor Carlson has failed to act in a manner aligned with his rhetoric.  He has not "fixed what can be fixed".  He will collect his stipend, free golf, and an expense account until the matter gets "reevaluated in the future"...  Good for him.

I am truly sorry that our collective efforts have failed to motivate our mayor, the council, or city manager to serve the will of the people.  Remember it.
