Upon meeting with Delta's city manger, the rationale behind the Rec Center Sunday closure has been disclosed....
The community's tax funded fitness center is now closed on Sundays to save an anticipated $50,000 in 2025. Restated, to help address unbudgeted infrastructure repairs elsewhere, the Rec Center is closed on Sundays to save the city a whopping $962 each week.
This decision comes after city employees received 10 to 20% retention pay increases between 2022 and 2023.
Ironically, the Recreation Center is the community's biggest draw and bringing people into Delta to shop drives the very sales tax that funds the city.
Despite a 38% increase in sales tax revenue post Covid, the city still needs to "rob the Rec Center to pay Paul" (a metaphor).
