Reinstate Asylums to Address America's Mental Health Crisis

The Issue

As someone who cares about the current state of our country's mental health crisis, I am deeply concerned about the plight of those suffering from severe mental health issues. These individuals need care, support and appropriate services for their unique needs and challenges. Yet, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 60% of adults with a mental illness did not receive mental health services in the previous year (NIMH). This not only puts these individuals at risk of harm but also has the potential to endanger others, contributing to a larger social crisis.

The solution, albeit complex, lies in our willingness to reinstate mental health asylums in a modern and humane way. Though the original asylums have a fraught history marked by abuses, they were intended to provide a sanctuary for those not capable of taking care of themselves due to severe mental health issues. With today's advanced medical understanding and potential for regulatory oversights, we could establish institutions that genuinely meet the needs of those at the extreme ends of the mental health spectrum.

By creating safe, regulated environments, we can address the safety issues and mental health care disparities that are critically present in our society. It's an investment in the wellbeing of our citizens now and for future generations. Adjourn the silence and neglect. It's time to take action to help our most vulnerable. Together, we can make a change. Please sign this petition to push for the reinstatement of mental health asylums in America.
