In America the incarceration rate is the sixth highest in the world 531 people per 100,000. Americas judicial system mainly uses punishment instead of rehab. Punishment is to subdue and break prisoners into no longer wanting to commit crimes. While this works most times it causes people to lose their humanity and can make people no longer function or be able to handle certain situations. While rehabilitation finds the source to the problem by seeing what causes criminals to commit crimes and find a solution to help the criminals in a humane and effective way. Punishment should be used for most extreme crimes like homicide, rape, manslaughter, sexual violence, or human trafficking etc. While rehabilitation may be more expensive than just incarceration, it offers more of an opportunity for the criminals to fix their lives and be a working member of society.
