Being unemployed for an extensive period of time can be a calling card for scammers. I have experienced it myself:
- Start ups that send you through 3-4 rounds of interviews then offer a 100% commission role until they become profitable.
- Small companies using interviews as free consulting opportunities and/or requiring extensive project work to move to the next stage. Two companies I interacted with required a confidentiality agreement stating they own and have a right to use your project work even if you are not hired. The CDA and language makes it clear that they have no intention of hiring you.
- Companies requiring payment to submit an application. (yes, this has happened to me)
- Talent agencies reaching out in messages to schedule a call for a role they have open. During the call, they gather your information and require 3 references immediately. This has happened with some of the larger recruiting firms. At the end of the call they then claim they have no roles open but they will be in touch. I NEVER heard back, but my references were called for business development purposes with my name being used while they try to gain new clients.
