Kratom, a powerful drug that has become increasingly prevalent in recent years, is wreaking havoc on communities and claiming lives across the world. Despite its growing threat, it remains largely unregulated, leaving countless individuals vulnerable to its devastating effects.  This drug is inaccurately described as “similar to caffeine” and is easily accessible to minors and others alike. In reality, consumption of this highly addictive drug can lead to infertility in men, cardiac issues (including cardiac arrest), respiratory issues, not to mention potentially life threatening withdrawal symptoms. This dangerous drug acts as both a stimulant and a depressant; many have described the effects of tinctures (such as kava and Kratom tinctures) as “gas station heroin.” Up until recently, there was no requirement to show ID to purchase it, and even so, enforcement is spotty at best. People have died from consuming these products, from seizures and cardiac or respiratory failure. 

Immediate action is necessary to curb the spread of this hazardous substance. We urge health authorities, lawmakers, and regulatory bodies to prioritize the regulation of Kratom. This includes classifying it under controlled substances, implementing strict guidelines for its use.
