Minister Miller's department says the bill's measures "could" address addictive design. Not will.

We're at 1,332 signatures. Thank you.

Bill C-34 is finally moving. Debate on the Safe Social Media Act started in the House of Commons on October 21, and Minister Marc Miller asked that the bill be sent to committee. The vote on that hasn't happened yet. (openparliament.ca, October 21, 2026)

Here's what matters for us. When MPs asked what the rules would actually look like, the answer was that a new regulator would work out the guidelines later. Last week I also got a reply from Minister Miller's department. It says the bill's measures "could" address addictive design features. Not will. Could.

That's the gap we've been pointing at since January: infinite scroll, autoplay, streaks and late-night notifications are the design choices that hook kids, and right now the bill doesn't name them.

The good news is that the government also said committee will hear from parents. Committee is where a bill gets amended, so that's where this gets decided.

Here's what I'm doing next: preparing a written submission for the committee asking for specific design protections to be written into the bill itself.

Here's what you can do this week:

Email your MP. Tell them you want infinite scroll, autoplay and engagement-driven features limited for kids written into Bill C-34, not left to future regulations. A short note is enough.
Share this petition with one more parent, teacher or grandparent.
Ottawa only moves when the pressure doesn't let up. Thank you for not letting up.
