A law professor just confirmed what we've been saying
We're at 1,156 signatures now, up from 1,075 three weeks ago.
Quick update on the ministers. On August 28, Ministers Solomon and Joly's office replied, thanking us for the petition and forwarding it to Minister Marc Miller's office, since he's the one actually sponsoring Bill C-34. That's it so far, a routing notice, not a decision. No word yet from Miller or from my own MP, Jeff Kibble, so I followed up with both of their offices this week.
Here's why the quiet isn't unusual: the House of Commons barely sat in August. Real debate on Bill C-34 doesn't resume until September 21. Nothing has actually moved on this bill since it was introduced in June, and nothing will until the House is back in the room.
One more thing worth knowing. University of Ottawa law professor Michael Geist published a breakdown of C-34 arguing it leaves roughly 50 substantive decisions, including which platforms are even covered and what the design requirements will actually be, to Cabinet and a Digital Safety Commission that doesn't exist yet. That's the exact gap we've been raising since January: don't pass a promise, write the specifics into the law.
So here's the ask, timed to actually matter: if you have an MP, email them before September 21. Tell them you want the design-specific provisions, not just an age limit, written into Bill C-34's text before debate wraps and it heads to committee. After the 21st, this window closes.
